Out of all the places that your child may want to go, we bet the dentist isn’t at the top of that list. It’s completely common for kids to feel a little nervous about their dental visits, especially if it’s their first time seeing a dentist. The good news is that there are a few things you can do as a parent to help make sure their experience is a good one.
Play Pretend at Home
One great way you can prepare your child for the dentist’s office is to roleplay at home what it will be like. You can take on the role of the dentist and walk them through a simplified version of what to expect. By having this experience from the comfort and familiarity of home, it’ll seem a whole lot less scary and unexpected when it comes time for the real thing.
Set a Good Example
Our kids are always paying attention to what we’re doing, and you want to set a good example for them when it comes to dental care. Take your child to your next dental visit so they can see it’s nothing to be scared about, and they can get an idea of what a dentist’s office is like without having to experience it as a patient yet. When you’re talking about the dentist, make sure to speak positively, so they don’t subconsciously take on any fear or anxiety.
Check Out Some Books
There’s a wonderful world of kids’ books out there specifically designed to help children feel more comfortable about visiting the dentist. Have a look at the options online, and let your kid pick out the ones that seem the most fun to them. By reading them together, you can not only prepare your child for what’s to come but also get them genuinely excited about the process.
